Shopping Haul Veganized
Where to shop
Visit your chilled, frozen, ‘free from’ sections online or in your supermarket. However check carefully, not everything in ‘free from’ will be vegan. Vegan options are appearing in their own sections or with other mainstream items.
Fruit & Veg
Colourful vegetables and fruit
Stock up on frozen, canned and dried for less wastage and use fresh where possible. Chickpeas, beans, lentils, hash browns can all be mixed with rice, pasta, noodles and wraps. Our favourite tip is to add baked beans into everything from stir-fries to bakes.
Easy transition swaps and treats
Biscuits
*check label as not all are vegan and can change.
Butter/spreads
Flora original and lighter (but check for vegan logo) and Vitalite Dairy Free are good spreads, if you want something closer to butter (very hard when cold!), try Flora vegan butter.
Cakes
Plant Pioneers (Sainsbury’s), Oggs, Bosh!, Plant Kitchen (Marks & Spencer)
Make your own brownies – recipe here
Make the ultimate coffee cake – recipe here
Cheese
Look in ‘Free from’ chilled or cheese section.
There are many vegan cheeses and as it depends on personal taste, try a few different brands to find your fav!
Suggestions: Boursin vegan spreadable, Violife, Tesco Vegan Red Leicester (mid strength), Applewood smoky vegan cheese (Asda)
Chocolate / Snacks
Whole fruit (fresh, dried and frozen), veg sticks, seeds and nuts are sources of protein and fibre. Try air frying chick peas and edamame beans or making your own popcorn and adding nutritional yeast, cinnamon, sweet or savoury seasonings.
Find chocolate from Animal Aid’s website shop and support a good cause when you shop!
Chocolate (Vegan milk): Vego, NoMo, Rhythm, Booja Booja, Raw Wafers, Tony’s Chocolonely (almond & sea salt*), Supermarket own brand dairy-free.
Chocolate (Vegan dark): Balance, Lordy Lord*, NoMo, Supermarket own brand dairy-free e.g Morrisons (check as some dark chocolate contains mik).
*Some of these brands do non-vegan, so check label.
There are vegan flavoured crisps (popcorn, seabrook*)
Croissants
Not sure who else stocks them, but head to Tesco’s frozen ‘bakery’ section to pick up Pret A Manger vegan croissants.
La Boulangère (vegan), rubysoflondon.com
Dessert, Custard, Yoghurt
Alpro chocolate dessert is great if you’re a chocoholic!
Alpro custard and yoghurt. Nature’s Charm has butterscotch, caramel sauce and coconut whipping cream to make banoffee pies. Add melted dark chocolate to silken tofu to make rich chocolate pots, check Dairy-free own brands too.
Eggs
Silken tofu with black salt makes great tasting scrambled eggs. Egg-free replacements for cakes: Orgran, Crakd, Tesco egg-free replacer, chia seeds, banana. For recipes see cake section
Ice cream
Roar, Swedish Glace Non-Dairy, Booja Booja, Supermarket own brand dairy-free vegan ice cream (‘free from’ section). Many mainstream brands have also made theirs vegan including Magnum and Cornetto.
Pasta, Noodles
Most are vegan and cheap (check no egg).
Plant Milk & Cream
Look in ambient section for long-life plant milks. See Viva! for guides on going dairy-free.
- Oatly! (Barista edition long life) and soy cream are great for coffees/hot drinks.
- Soya milk is good for tea, supermarket own brands are usually the cheapest.
See PBHP.UK for non-dairy benefits and also plant milk for children.
Pizza
One Planet Pizza, Purezza Pizza (award winning, dine in option available), Crosta Mollica* (includes add your own topping), Chicago Town*, White Rabbit. You can buy vegan flatbread and add toppings of choice too! Just add houmous, cashew cream (make your own) or vegan cheddar.
Papa Johns, Prezzo, Pizza Express, Zizzi, Pizza Hut, Dominos all have vegan options. Remember: Ask for vegan menu as this will list way more options than standard menu!
Plant protein
Tofu/tempeh and seitan are good sources of protein, also pulses – all types of beans (butter beans, white, red and black beans in cans, jars or dried), lentils, chickpeas and peas.
Soya mince (dried/frozen), textured vegetable protein (TVP), pea and fava bean protein chunks (dried and take minutes to rehydrate and cook) are useful to keep and add to noodles, pasta, rice, potatoes and more. Try adding silken tofu to make rich and creamy sauces and even as a dessert when whisked with melted dark chocolate and chilled for an extra protein boost!
Mayo & Salad Creams
Hellman’s vegan mayo, Mr Organic vegan mayo. Tesco and Asda both have ‘free from’ salad cream that’s vegan.
